Sporting Success - January 2012

 

Snowboarding 

Maddy Alexis (Year 10) attended an elite snowboarding training camp in Colorado and competed with considerable success in a number of US slopestyle competitions. Such was her success that she will remain training in the US until early March in the hope of qualifying for the Junior World Snowboarding Championships.

 

Gymnastics 

Amy Smit (Year 12) and Riley Cross (Year 10) continued their great Gymnastic success. Both girls competed in the United States over a two week period.

 

Water Polo

Harry Shaw (Year 8) has continued his fine form in Water Polo and has been selected in an U14 Representative team to play in the State Championships at Tamworth.

 

Sailing 

Finn Gilbert (Year 8) was again successful in Sailing. Competing in the State Championships, Finn placed 3rd in the Sabot nationals (120 competitors), 3rd in O'pen Bic States (45), crewed in Flying Eleven Nationals (came 16th out of 86) and also learnt to windsurf.

 

Manly Daily Junior Sports Awards & Surf Lifesaving 

Jayke Rees (Year 11) is a finalist (one of 6) in the Manly Daily Junior Sports Star Awards and will attend the awards presentation on Wednesday 22 February. He competed in the holidays at the State Age Swimming Championships and managed 3rd place in the 50 free and 6th in the 100m and 200m freestyle. All his times were personal bests. He also won the U17 Iron Man and Board relay at the Manly Surf Lifesaving Carnival which is one of the biggest carnivals of the year.

 

Surf Lifesaving

Guy Rees (Year 8) came 1st in the U14 Surf Swim, 2nd in the Iron Man, 3rd in the Cameron Relay, 3rd on the Board and 1st in the Board Relay events at the Freshwater Surf Lifesaving Carnival on Australia Day, also a huge carnival.

Isaac Smith (Year 8) came 1st in the U13 Surf Swim, 2nd in the Iron Man 2nd in the Board and 3rd in the Board Relay at the same carnival.

Keelan Smith (Year 7) came 3rd in the U13 Beach Sprints and 2nd in the Beach Flags at the same carnival.

 

Kayaking

Fraser and Simon McTavish were involved in two kayaking competitions, the State Championships at Penrith and the Grand Prix 2 event at Ballarat in Victoria. At the State event, Fraser came 1st in the K2 1000, 500 and 200m and K4 200m and 2nd in the K4 1000 and 500m.  At the Grand Prix 2 event, Fraser came 1st in the K4 1000 and came 2nd in the K2 1000, 200 and 500 events.  Simon's results at the State event were: 1st in the K2 1000, K4 1000, K2 500, K4 500, K2 200 and K4 200; 2nd in the K1 1000, K1 500 and he came 3rd in the K1 200.  At the Grand Prix 2 event, Simon came 1st in the K2 1000, K4 1000, K2 500 and K2 200 and he came 3rd in the K1 1000 and the K1 500. 

 

The boys are now prepping for Grand Prix 3 and Nationals in March which will be held at the Olympic Venue in Penrith.  This is an Olympic qualifying year and event so it will be well attended by athletes from the Asia Pacific region.

 

For Fraser and Simon Nationals will be a qualifying event for the Olympic Hopes team going to Hungary in September (Simon) and the Junior National team going to Canada and the USA in July (Fraser).  Good luck boys!
