Curriculum

Junior School classes are conducted following the School's unique 'twin school' philosophy whereby boys and girls are taught in separate classrooms for most of their learning. To enhance this model pupils are also grouped in co-educational numeracy and literacy groups from time to time at both Grade and Stage level.

For entrance into the Junior School at Kindergarten level pupils must have reached the age of 4 years and 7 months by January 1 in the year of their enrolment in most circumstances. A high priority is given to developing pupil capability in literacy and numeracy from an early age. Teachers' programmes are developed following the NSW  Board of Studies Syllabuses, and include the six Key Learning Areas of; Maths, English, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), Science and Technology, Creative Arts, and Physical Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). French is taught to all pupils from Form Three. In the Junior School we take advantage of having the Secondary specialists available to teach music, choir, visual art, science, technology, PE and health and French. Interpersonal Relationships, a strand of the PD syllabus, is also taught by primary specialists.

All pupils are supported and enriched at a number of levels, from opportunities within in the classroom to acceleration in various forms.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is the cornerstone of the Pittwater House Schools’ philosophy. Care is provided commencing with the Form Teachers as the first point of contact following on to the Head of the Junior Schools. There are staff members on hand, including the Dean of Welfare (School Chaplain), who are available to assist pupils and parents at any time.

The School believes young people respond best when provided with a clear definition of their responsibilities, privileges and limitations, and when they are aware of the consequences of their actions. A system of positive incentives operates to recognise achievement in the classroom and in the areas of extra curricular activities, sports, community service and citizenship. In the Junior School the children work to achieve Honour Cards and Achievement Certificates, many of which are presented to pupils in the weekly assembly. Each term there is a focus on a different ‘special award’ which also provides incentive.to strive to do their best. The pupils work towards gaining their Excellence Awards in a variety of educational fields.

Appropriate religious observance and moral training at the School is broadly based on the principles of the Anglican Church. The children of the Junior School participate in a weekly Chapel Service and each pupil is expected to attend all School ceremonies and services which include an act of corporate worship.
